SUMMER BEERS 2025

A Look Back At This Summer's Drinking Calendar

The last of the hosepipe bans are being lifted, the shops are running two for one deals on pencil cases and all the ice-cream men are wistfully googling the best budget autumnal getaways. As September looms, we are, undeniably, entering the final stages of British summer time.

As we soak up the final rays of patchy sunshine and pant our way through the final weeks of the UKs hottest summer on record, we thought we’d take a sunlit stroll down the dappled cobbles of memory lane and reminisce on some of our favourite seasonal brews from this summer.

And there have been some belters!

MAY

Back in May this year, it’s fair to say we weren’t optimistic about the British Summer weather ahead of us… Can you blame us? Every year we get our hopes up with a smattering of sunshine in late April stoking fantasies of drinking cold beers on the beach while a barbeque gently puffs out smoke and sausage smells up into the atmosphere. Just to have our dreams dashed by buckets and buckets of rainwater heaved over us, one after another by the British climate.
Well not this time we thought… we’ll go in with our eyes wide open, we’ll name a beer specifically for the early summer rainshowers which are sure to arrive bang on schedule, just as soon as we’ve donned our sunnies and packed away our big coats. That was the plan, and it was a good one, right up until the weatherman delivered bank holiday weekend after bank holiday weekend of glorious, golden sunshine!

DIGITAL-NOMAD
SUNSHOWER BLONDE – 4%
Named at the start of the year with a touch of pessimism, Sunshower Blonde arrived just in time for the first of this summer’s ‘Mini-Heatwaves’.
Although it’s namesake proved elusive, we weren’t about to let the lack of rain stop play and this tasty, mosaic hopped, beer proved to be an early beer garden smash hit with those laying down their base tans ready for the summer ahead.

DIGITAL NOMAD NEIPA –  4.8%

This one was brewed with a tropical fruit salad of hops, with 6 stacked into the recipe line-up! Adding in Ahtanum hops (A first for us) contributing a  mild bitterness along with heaps of  lemon, pine and floral flavours.  Brewed with oats for a silkier mouthfeel, and glowing radiantly with a light NEIPA haze
(Cue the phone calls –  “Is it meant to be Hazy?!)

JUNE

After a month of Bank Holiday’s and and uncharacteristically good weather all through May, we started June by seemingly, completely and utterly losing grip of our senses…
It was the beginning of June, shaping up to be the warmest British summer in years, and we were brewing dark beers! Not exactly the sort of beers you see surfers with radiant tans and glistening abs queuing up at the beach bars for are they? Well we’re in Manchester, 100 miles from the nearest beach, and lets just say we know our city and we know our audience. While the mercury in the thermometers was climbing, we had you sipping stouts as sundowners and basking in the rays with bitters in hand.
And then it rained…
DARKSIDE 2

DARKSIDE STOUT – 4.6%
Just as we thought we were on a roll with ‘summery’ beers. Our inboxes were flooded with messages asking about dark beers. The dark drinking community had spoken and they didn’t give a toss about what the weatherman had to say
This jet black stout was packed with flavour with hints of espresso coffee and dark chocolate, with more than a touch of smoke on the finish. Vanguard and Columbus hops were used to give the beer a deep yet understated touch of citrus fruit, with delicate herbal and woody notes making this a deliciously moreish dark beer, perfect for a summer nightcap as the sun went down and the bbq embers faded.
EARLY DOORS BITTER – 4%

We Northerners take great pride and pleasure in our pubs, and when we have chance to get there sooner than expected, even more so! Early Doors Bitter was brewed to celebrate those perfect afternoons when everything goes just right, and the beer is spot on. As with all good bitters, this coppery coloured session beer was built around a sturdy, rich malty core, with hops used to tighten up the palate, and freshen up the finish.

JULY

In July we were finally on brief! We’d got the memo, it’s summer regardless of what mother nature decides to serve up. We brewed up three absolute summer slammers for July – Three hoppy, juicy, pale ales guaranteed to quench thirsts and take names. This time, us and the weatherman, were on the same page and these three beers flew out the brewery doors.
REST DAY
Time Bandit
Elemental Pale
 REST DAY – 4.2%
The days were dry, when we opened our curtains first thing we were met with an unusual sight for Manchester. There were no ominous grey clouds, not sludgy puddles on the ground and no excuses to not go for a morning run… urgh no wonder Californians are so annoyingly energetic. After a couple of days of this we were in need of two things:
A rest day and a nice refreshing pint!
Stuffed with Amarillo, Mosaic and Galaxy hops, Rest Day was the perfect cure for this sudden burst of well intentioned, motivation.
Punchy, Citrussy, Well Rounded, and pairing so well with a Pub Burger there really was no hope for keeping up the momentum.
 TIME BANDIT – 4.2%
Our biggest brew of the summer, we brewed gallons of this seasonal favourite and built towering cask monuments with the barrels before sending them out all across the country
Named for those golden afternoon that seem to just get away from you.
For time well spent doing absolutely nothing of any importance whatsoever.
And for your best mate down the pub who will furtively insist you’ve got time for one more “for the road”.
A light malt bill paired with Simcoe, Amarillo, and Magnum hops to create the perfect afternoon hijacker.
ELEMENTAL PALE 4.6%
Another new summer beer to the Brightside roster which may well be returning year after year with the way this one is sipping!  Our Elemental Pale was brewed to be everything we love about the style.
Light coppery coloured with a nose full of stone fruits and grassy aromatics. Hopped with El Dorado (Gold in a glass!) and supported by Citra & Mosaic for those signature, citrussy, tropical notes.
At 4.6% it’s not quite a session beer but we’ll drink it like it is!

AUGUST

In with the old and with the new. August brought a bit of experimentation as well as the return of a brewery favourite. Our new ‘Circle Series’ flew out the brewery doors almost as soon as they hit the weekly lists, with both Sandbar and Paradox selling out in less than a week. This left us with an empty space in our cold store that needed to be filled with beer. So we pulled out the recipe book of old reliables and picked out one of our favourite comfort brews, what better way to some up the last days of summer than with a fresh batch of Happy Days?

Happy Days (1)
THE ‘CIRCLE SERIES’
SANDBAR  HAZY PALE 5%
The first beer up in our new ‘Circle Series’ Sandbar set the bar for everything we set out to do with our experimental run of beers. Sandbar came about whilst we were playing around with a fancy new hazy IPA yeast, specially developed to give a heightened ester profile and a stable haze from the first sip to the last. With Amarillo, Citra and Comet on the brew sheet, Sandbar became a juicy, zesty stone fruity hit overnight and we were sold out in less time than it took us to brew it!
PARADOX COLD IPA 4.4%
IPA by name, lager through fermentation…Cold IPAs are a wonderful creation, perfect for warm weather drinking or enjoying with fish and chips (my ultimate food pairing!)
Paradox is dry hopped with Pekko & Mosaic which provide the hop forward character of an IPA, but it’s fermented at a colder temperature with lager yeast to give the bright crispness of a classic lager. The absolute best of both worlds!

HAPPY DAYS –  3.8%
Like slipping into a old pair of comfortable slippers, it just feels good to revisit a recipe like Happy Days. Steeped in nostalgia for us, this was the first beer we ever brewed at our then new brewery (and current home) in Radcliffe.
The move took us from brewing 10 casks a day, 7 days a week, to filling 70 casks in one brew!
Oh Happy Days!

Now... Who's ready for Christmas?!
